About Muthoot Finance
Muthoot Finance is a registered NBFC which is involved in the business of providing gold loans with a major presence in Southern India. The company was incorporated in 1997 as “The Muthoot Finance Private Limited”. In 2001, It received a licence from RBI to function as an NBFC. In 2005, Muthoot Enterprises Private Limited merged with the company. It was converted into a public limited company in 2008 with the name Muthoot Finance Limited. In 2011, the company was listed on BSE and NSE after an IPO.
The company finished the acquisition of Muthoot Insurance Brokers Pvt Limited in 2016. It proposed the acquisition of IDBI Asset Management Limited and IDBI MF Trustee Company Limited in 2019.
In 2023, It was honoured as the Biggest Wealth Creator Company in Kerala by ICCI – Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Cochin. The company won the Best Family Business Award in the GIGA Category at Moneycontrol’s Indian Family Business Awards 2022.
Business Segments
Gold Loan: This is the company’s major business, which derives a significant portion of revenue. It provides secured loans in lieu of gold ornaments like gold jewellery.
Gold Loan at Home: This segment was launched in July 2020. It is a digital app-based service which allows customers to apply for gold loans via the mobile app ‘Loan@Home’ and web portal.
Housing Finance: The company operates this segment via Muthoot Homefin (India) Limited (MHIL), a housing loan arm of the Muthoot Group. It is a non-deposit-taking housing finance company registered with the National Housing Bank (NHB) and regulated & controlled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Personal Loan: The company caters to individuals with personal loan services for fulfilling the immediate requirements of funds.
Insurance: Under this segment, the company provides insurance and related services to customers through Muthoot Insurance Brokers Pvt Ltd. It provides products such as health insurance, vehicle insurance, home insurance, life insurance, travel insurance, etc.
Other Services: The company also provides multiple services such as corporate loans, SME loans, PAN cards, Micro finance, NCD, etc.
Subsidiary:
As of August 2023, the company had the following subsidiaries:
- Muthoot Money Ltd (MML): It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Muthoot Finance Ltd in October 2018. The company is a registered NBFC engaged mainly in extending gold loans and loans for commercial vehicles and equipment.
- Muthoot Asset Management Private Limited (MAMPL): It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Muthoot Finance Ltd. It provides asset management services.
- Muthoot Trustee Private Limited (MTPL): It is a 100% subsidiary which is yet to commence commercial operations.
Key Personnel
George Alexander, MD
George Alexander Muthoot is currently the Managing Director (MD) of Muthoot Finance Ltd. He has been the Chairman of the Kerala Non-banking Finance Companies Welfare Association from 2004 to 2007 and is currently its Vice Chairman. He is a qualified chartered accountant (CA) and a graduate of commerce from Kerala University.
