India is home to the world’s third-largest number of startups, with women playing a key role in this vibrant ecosystem. Half of India’s startup community is boosted by women’s contributions. Presently, about 14% of entrepreneurs in the country are women, which is around 8.05 million. Furthermore, women run over 20% of small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

Women Leading in the Business World

According to a report, women-led businesses tend to earn significantly more revenue, offering more than twice the investment returns. The report also highlights that firms with strong female leadership see a 10.1% yearly return on equity, whereas those lacking in female leadership see only a 7.4% return. Another study looking at Fortune 1000 companies with female CEOs compared to the S&P 500 between 2002 and 2014 found that companies with female leadership had 226% higher returns.

Out of 1,17,254 startups in India, 55,816 (48%) have at least one woman on their board of directors as of December 2023. This shows how crucial women are in the startup scene.

Contribution of Startup India Initiative

The Government of India’s Startup India initiative has significantly increased the number of recognized startups from just 300 in 2016 to 1,18,320 by January 14, 2024. This program empowers women to join the country’s economic development while also achieving financial independence.

The Startup India Initiative has also successfully showcased the diverse geographical locations from which startups are emerging, with more than half coming from tier 2 and 3 cities as of December 2023. This spread highlights India’s startup ecosystem’s inclusive and empowering nature, offering women opportunities nationwide.

Since Startup India’s inception, India’s startup scene has grown rapidly, establishing it as the third-largest globally. These startups have been crucial in job creation, generating over 12.42 lakh direct jobs as of December 2023, demonstrating startups’ essential role in providing employment opportunities in various sectors.
