About NHPC

NHPC Limited, formerly known as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, is a public-sector hydropower company in India. It was incorporated in 1975 to plan, promote, and organise the efficient development of hydroelectric power. More recently, NHPC has expanded its operations to include other renewable energy sources, such as solar, geothermal, tidal, and wind power. NHPC is listed on the NSE and BSE after successfully concluding its IPO in 2009.

As of September 30, 2023, NHPC’s total installed capacity is 7,097.20 MW, including 1,546 MW from joint ventures. This includes 6,971.20 MW from 22 hydroelectric power plants, 76 MW from two solar power projects, and 50 MW from a wind power project. NHPC’s hydroelectric power generation capacity makes up about 14.88% of India’s total installed hydroelectric capacity of 46,850.18 MW.

NHPC and its subsidiaries are currently involved in the construction of 15 projects with a total installed capacity of 10,449 MW. These projects include three hydroelectric projects – Subansiri Lower HEP (2,000 MW), Dibang Multipurpose Project (2,880 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh, and Parbati-II HEP (800 MW) in Himachal Pradesh.

In addition, 13 projects with a total installed capacity of 4,847 MW are in the clearance stage, including four hydroelectric and three solar projects by NHPC on its own and six projects (two hydroelectric and four solar) in joint venture mode. Furthermore, four hydroelectric projects with a total installed capacity of 4,690 MW are in the survey and investigation stages being undertaken by NHPC.

During the financial year 2022-2023, NHPC power stations generated 24,907 MU (million units) of electricity.

Business Segments 

NHPC Limited currently operates through 3 business segments:

  1. Generation of electricity: This is NHPC’s primary business segment. NHPC owns and operates 22 hydroelectric power plants with a total installed capacity of 6,971.20 MW. The company also has a 50 MW wind power project and two solar power projects with a total capacity of 76 MW.
  2. Trading of power:NHPC trades electricity generated by its power plants and electricity purchased from other sources. The company trades electricity on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and the Power Trading Corporation of India (PTC).
  3. Project Management, Construction Contracts, and Consultancy Assignments: NHPC provides consulting and project management services to other companies in the power sector. The company also has a construction arm that undertakes the construction of power projects.

Subsidiaries of NHPC Limited

  1. NHDC Limited: It was incorporated in August 2000. NHPC holds a 51.08% stake in NHDC. In comparison, the Government of Madhya Pradesh owns 26%, and Narmada Basin Projects Company Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Government of Madhya Pradesh) holds the remaining 22.92%. NHDC operates two power stations in Madhya Pradesh: the 1,000 MW Indira Sagar and the 520 MW Omkareshwar.
  2. Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Corporation Ltd: LDHCL was incorporated in October 2009. NHPC holds a 74.82% stake, and the Government of Manipur holds the remaining 25.18%. LDHCL is executing the 66 MW Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project in Noney District, Manipur. All statutory clearances for the project have been obtained, and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been signed with the Government of Manipur.
  3. Lanco Teesta Hydro Power Limited: LTHPL was acquired by NHPC through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) in October 2019. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NHPC. LTHPL is carrying out construction of the 500 MW Teesta VI HE Project in Sikkim, which is currently underway.

Shri Rajeev Kumar Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director

Shri Rajeev Kumar Vishnoi is the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited. Vishnoi has extensive experience in the power sector. He has held various leadership positions in NHPC since 1989, including Chief General Manager (Hydro Projects), Executive Director (Projects), Director (Projects), and Director (Technical). He was also the Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited, a hydroelectric power development company, from 2011 to 2012. Before joining NHPC, Vishnoi worked in various capacities at the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL). He also served as the Chief Engineer of the National Hydro Power Training Institute (NHPTI).
