History of India Cements Limited
Established in 1946, India Cements Limited is the largest cement producer in India. It was founded by Shri S N N Sankaralinga Iyer and Sri T S Narayanaswami.
In 1949, the company set up their first plant in Sankar Nagar (Thalaiyuthu) in Tamil Nadu. In June 1958, the company launched its IPO. By 1989, India Cements Limited had two plants with a 1.3 million tonnes capacity. In 1990, the company worked on the conversion to dry process of the Sankar Nagar plant with an increased capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum. In 1991, they set up a shipping division.
In the next decade, the company acquired several cement plants in other states, such as Andhra Pradesh and expanded their business. By 2008, India Cements Limited had 8 cement plants in India with a capacity of 8.81 million tonnes per annum. In 2008, the company successfully bid for the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, and the team won 5 IPL trophies until 2023.
The company also ventured into other sectors like energy and shipping. They have 3 ships, a captive power plant of 50 MW capacity at Shankar Nagar to cater to the energy needs of their cement plants in Tamil Nadu and a coal mine in Indonesia.
India Cements Limited has grown immensely since its inception. As of March 2022, it has a capacity of 15.5 million tonnes per annum. The company has 8 cement plants in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan. They have 2 grinding units, one each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
