About GAIL (India)

History of GAIL India

GAIL (India), formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited, was established on August 16, 1984, with the goal of developing gas sector infrastructure to support the natural gas industry’s growth in India. As India’s premier natural gas company, GAIL manages the entire natural gas value chain, encompassing exploration, production, processing, transmission, distribution, marketing, and related services.

In 1991, GAIL successfully operationalised the 2800-km Hazira–Vijaipur–Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline. During 1991–93, the company constructed three LPG plants and acquired regional pipelines, enabling regional gas distribution across India. GAIL commenced city gas distribution in Delhi in 1997, establishing nine CNG stations to serve the city’s public transport. In 1999, GAIL established northern India’s sole petrochemical plant in Pata.

In 2001, GAIL made significant strides by becoming the first Infrastructure Provider Category II Licensee and signing India’s first Service Level Agreement for bandwidth leasing in the Delhi–Vijaipur sector through its telecom venture, GAILTEL. The same year, GAIL commissioned the world’s longest cross-country LPG Transmission Pipeline from Jamnagar to Loni.

Over time, GAIL diversified into petrochemicals, telecom, and liquid hydrocarbons while expanding its presence in power, LNG re-gasification, city gas distribution, and exploration and production through equity and joint ventures. In a transformative move, the company rebranded itself as GAIL (India) Limited on November 22, 2002.
