About Bharat Dynamics
History
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is a prominent Indian organisation specialising in the production of ammunition and missile systems. Established in 1970 in Hyderabad, India, BDL’s primary mission was to become a manufacturing hub for guided weapon systems. It commenced its operations with a team of engineers sourced from Indian Ordnance Factories, DRDO, and aerospace industries.
BDL’s inaugural product was the first-generation anti-tank guided missile, known as the French SS11B1. This achievement resulted from a licensing agreement between the Government of India and Aerospatiale. BDL operates from three manufacturing units situated in Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad; Bhanur, Medak district; and Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
Historically, India embarked on the development of indigenous missiles under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). BDL played a pivotal role in this initiative, earning the distinction of being the Prime Production Agency. This association enabled BDL to acquire advanced manufacturing and program management skills and technologies.
In 2018, the Indian government divested 2.24 crore shares of Bharat Dynamics through an initial public offering (IPO) that took place from March 13th to March 15th of that year.
As a reliable partner aligning with the Concurrent Engineering Approaches adopted by DRDO in IGMDP, BDL contributed significantly to the development of India’s cutting-edge Surface-to-Surface Missile, Prithvi. The company successfully delivered Prithvi missiles to all three defence services as per their specifications.
BDL has also diversified its expertise into underwater weapon systems and air-to-air missiles, aided by technological support from DRDO and other stakeholders in the field.
In the fiscal year 2022-2023, BDL (Bharat Dynamics Limited) marked significant milestones with the establishment of several essential facilities. These include the inauguration of a cutting-edge Warhead Manufacturing Facility located at the Bhanur Unit, the launch of the Radio Frequency (RF) Seeker Facility at the Kanchanbagh Unit, and the introduction of a Central Storage Facility at the Visakhapatnam Unit.
