History

Voltas Limited, an Indian multinational home appliances company headquartered in Mumbai, has a rich history and notable contributions to the industry. Established on September 6, 1954, through a collaboration between Tata Sons and Volkart Brothers, the company quickly gained prominence in the market.

The company’s journey is marked by numerous collaborations and ventures. In 1963, Voltas partnered with Scottish Machine Tool Corporation for machine tools. Voltas also joined forces with Eaton Yale and Towns in 1964 for forklift trucks and later teamed up with Mine Safety Appliances Co., U.S.A., and Associated Battery Makers for safety equipment production. They diversified into the Agro-Industrial Products Division in 1966.

In the years that followed, Voltas continued to expand its product portfolio and geographic reach. Notable milestones include agreements with May & Christe of West Germany for cast-resin transformers, Fanuc of Japan for CNC drilling centres, and a joint venture with LG Electronics for direct cool refrigerators. Voltas made strides in the water treatment business, commenced road construction equipment operations, and launched fresh-air coolers.

In 2017, Voltas crossed 1.5 million units in cooling products. The company’s partnership with Ardutch B.V. and the establishment of Voltbek Home Appliances marked significant entries into the consumer durables market. Voltas introduced Smart ACs controlled via Amazon Alexa and a range of white goods under the Voltas Beko brand. They also ventured into the water treatment segment and expanded their manufacturing facilities.

Notably, Voltas collaborates closely with the Central and State Governments in India for various rural electrification and water management projects, showcasing its dedication to contributing to the community and addressing societal needs. With a vast network of over 25,000 customer touchpoints and a strong reputation within the Tata Group, Voltas continues to shape the landscape of the home appliances industry.

Business Segments 

  • Unitary Cooling Products (UCP): UCP achieved robust growth across various market segments and regions, notably with over 25% growth in a key segment, offering top-notch value-for-money cooling solutions. This segment includes air conditioners, air coolers, and commercial refrigeration products.
  • Voltas Beko: Voltas Beko launched an innovative, fully automated top-load washing machine with an in-built heater and expanded its product range with over 100 new SKUs. Voltas Beko specialises in washing machines, refrigerators, and other home appliances.
  • International Operations Business Group (IOBG): IOBG successfully completed multiple projects in GCC countries and is experiencing explosive growth in Saudi Arabia through involvement in significant Giga projects. The company provides engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for power plants, oil and gas facilities, and other industrial projects
  • Infrastructure Solutions: Infrastructure Solutions secured major projects in MEP, water supply, and solar EPC, including Chennai and Bangalore Metro, while also installing 265 water treatment plants in Bihar. Under this segment, Voltas provides mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services, water supply and treatment systems, and solar energy projects
  • Textile Machinery Division (TMD): TMD reached record performance levels with a focus on post-sales services and expanded its portfolio to include spreading and weaving preparatory machines. Voltas manufactures textile machines for spinning, weaving, and finishing.
  • Mining and Construction Equipment (M&CE): M&CE segments manufactures mining and construction equipment. Voltas M&C Equipment gained the trust of new business owners in Mozambique, established sustainability partnerships in India, and is actively pursuing opportunities in the African region.

  • Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Ltd: UMPESL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Voltas Ltd, specializing in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for power plants, oil and gas facilities, and industrial projects. They have a proven track record of timely and budget-friendly project completion.
  • Voltas Water Solutions Pvt. Ltd: It is another subsidiary of Voltas, that offers water and wastewater treatment solutions for diverse industries, employing experienced engineers for tailored solutions.
  • Universal Comfort Products Pvt. Ltd: UCPL is a Voltas subsidiary, and is a top player in the Indian air conditioning market, producing and selling a range of high-quality air conditioning products.
