About Tata Communications

History

Tata Communications Limited, formerly known as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), is a prominent Indian telecommunications company. Initially, it was a government-owned telecommunications service provider under the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Communications. However, in 2008, , Tata Group acquired it from the government and renamed it to Tata Communications Limited 

Tata Communications offers a wide range of network services and software-defined network platforms, including Ethernet, SD-WAN, content delivery networks (CDNs), internet services, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and private lines.

The company’s history dates back to its founding as Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) in 1986. Under the leadership of B. K. Syngal from 1991 to 1998, VSNL made significant strides, including launching India’s first publicly-available Internet plans in 1995. In 2004, VSNL International, the international arm of VSNL, was established. 

Tata Communications has a global presence, serving customers in over 190 countries and territories worldwide. Currently, their client base includes more than 7,000 businesses, with over 300 belonging to the Fortune 500 list. 

The company is a major player in the telecommunications industry, connecting four out of five mobile subscribers across the globe and linking businesses to 80% of the world’s leading cloud service providers. 

Notably, Tata Communications operates the largest wholly owned and highly advanced subsea fiber network, which forms the backbone of the Internet. Their network carries approximately 30% of the world’s internet routes.
