History of KNR Constructions Limited (KNRCL)

Incorporated in 1995, KNR Constructions Limited (KNRCL) is a multi-domain infrastructure project development company that offers Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services across different fast-growing sectors, including highways, irrigation, roads and urban water infrastructure management.

The company was started in 1995 by professionals with experience in the infrastructure development sector. In 1997, KNR Constructions acquired the assets and liabilities of M/s K. Narasimha Reddy & Co. (partnership firm) at their book values. This partnership firm, established by Shri K. Narasimha Reddy, a promoter of KNRCL, had been involved in civil and mechanical contract works since 1979.

In 2006, the company bagged their first Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) project in Karnataka worth ₹4,420 million. They entered into the urban water infrastructure with a contract in Bangalore. This was followed by another BOT project in Telangana in 2007. In 2008, KNR Constructions Limited went public and got listed on the NSE and BSE. 

In 2012, the company got the biggest work order from Sadbhav Engineering Limited for the construction of the Bijapur Hungund Road project, which was worth ₹8,250 million. In 2013, they got an EPC project for the Madurai–Ramanathapuram Section of NH-49 in Tamil Nadu under NHDP Phase-III, worth ₹9,371 million. In the same year, they got their third BOT toll project in Kerala worth ₹9,005 million. 

In 2018, KNR Constructions got 5 Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) projects worth ₹56,112 million. In the next year, 2019, they signed a Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Cube Highways for 3 SPVs. 

In 2020, the company transferred a 100% stake in KNR Walayar Tollways Private Limited (SPV) to Cube Highways and Infrastructure III Private Limited for an enterprise value of ₹5,117.8 million. This was followed by another transfer in 2021, where they transferred a 49% stake in 2 Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) (KNR Tirumala Infra Private Limited and KNR Shankarampet Projects Private Limited) to Cube Highways and Infrastructure III and another 51% stake in 3 SPVs (KNR Tirumala, KNR Sriranagam and KNR Shankarampet) to Cube Highways and Infrastructure III Private Limited. 

As of March 2023, KNR Constructions Limited has projects in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They have done 79 projects in India.

  • KNR Palani Infra Private Limited: This wholly-owned subsidiary of the company was established as an SPV to undertake the construction of the Oddanchatram-Madathukulam section of NH-209 on HAM in Tamil Nadu. 
  • KNR Energy Limited: This wholly-owned subsidiary of the company is involved in the gas, electricity, steam and hot water supply.
