About Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals
Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) is engaged in the manufacturing of Caustic Soda Lye. It was incorporated on March 29, 1973, by Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation Limited (GIIC), a wholly owned company of the Government of Gujarat, as a core promoter. The company was listed on the stock exchanges in 1975. In 1976, GACL started its operations with a capacity of 37,425 MTPA from its Mercury Cell process at its Plant.
GACL has been following the strategy of continuous capacity expansion in core areas since its inception. The first stage of the Caustic Soda Plant expansion in 1981 was by raising the capacity to 70,425 MTPA, followed by a diversification programme to produce 2000 MTPA of Sodium Cyanide in 1982. In 1984, the company undertook a second stage of expansion to increase the capacity of the Caustic Soda Plant to 103,425 MTPA. In 1994, the company converted the second Mercury Cell to a Membrane Cell.
In 1996, it established a manufacturing facility for producing 11000 MTA Hydrogen Peroxide (100%) at the Vadodara Complex to utilise Hydrogen gas, a co-product of the Caustic Soda Process. In 2007, Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) received the National Award for Excellence In Cost Management-2006 from the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI).
In 2011, It commissioned its new 14000 TPA Hydrogen Peroxide Plant (on a 100% basis) at Dahej Complex. In 2015, GACL commenced a piped supply of products from the Dahej plant. In 2017, National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) and GACL established a joint venture, GNAL, to set up the ₹1,800-crore caustic soda plant. In 2020, the company updated that all plants at its Baroda Complex have started operating at full capacity.

Shri Swaroop P, Managing Director
Shri Swaroop P is the company’s current managing director (MD). Shri Swaroop P. is an IAS Officer of the 2003 batch. Before joining GACL, he held various important positions in the Government of Gujarat (GoG), such as Assistant Collector in Rajula in Amreli District, District Development Officer (DDO), Panchmahals, etc. He has also been the Managing Director of Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited and Managing Director of Industrial Extension Bureau (iNDEXTb).
He has a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and a Master of Science in Applied Psychology. He did his Master’s in International Development Policy from Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University, U.S.A. He is Commissioner of Land Reforms and ex-officio Secretary to Government, Revenue Department, Gandhinagar.
