About Cummins India

History

Cummins India is a 51% subsidiary of Cummins Inc. USA, which is the largest independent designer cum manufacturer of diesel engines above 200 HP. Cummins India Ltd was incorporated in 1962 with the name Kirloskar Cummins Ltd. The company started their operations in Pune. The partnership ended in 1997 when Kirloskar sold its ownership. The company was first listed in August 1962.

In the past, the company has been a part of multiple joint ventures with major brands, such as Tata Motors, Crompton Greaves and Newage, etc. In 2007, the company set up its Ranjangaon plant as India’s first green plant. In December 2013, Cummins India launched its power generation system, compliant with the new environmental norms. In August 2016, the power systems business of Cummins India launched its new 250 kVA generator set.

The company was awarded for being the best supplier by BEML in 2017 for the preceding two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016. In FY 2021, Cummins India supported the Indian Raiways in its project to 100% electrify the broad-gauge network with seamless supplies of Diesel Electric Tower Cars (DETC). It also supplied engines to export rail equipment to Nepal, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka.

In FY21, Cummins India accomplished the timely delivery of fully integrated 1 MW gensets for the Indian Navy’s stealth missile destroyer vessel and survey vessels. In the early 2020s, the company moved from mechanical to the new-generation electronic 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines to meet the Bharat Stage IV (BSIV) emission norms. The company was given the full execution work of gensets for a large hyperscale data centre coming up in India.

The company has been launching various software tools, such as Cummins Dealer Operating System (CDOS) to make it more cloud-ready for future requirements. In 2023, the company also launched its new range of Cummins Brake Linings, Power Booster Kit, Clutches, Cummins Funnel Fuel Filters and CNG Kits.

Business Segments

Around 95% of the company’s revenue from operations comes from its sale of products, the remaining coming from services. The company has the following business segments:

  1. Engines – The company builds various types of engines to be used in industries such as railways, mining, pumps, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, oil and gas, and construction vehicles.
  2. Power – The power generation systems produced by Cummins India include integrated generator sets that are in the range of 7.5 kVA to 3750 kVA. Such equipment includes transfer switches, paralleling switchgear and controls.
  3. Distribution – The company, via its country-wide network of authorised dealerships, hundreds of branch offices and service touchpoints, provides parts, batteries, new and rebuilt engines, services and customer support solutions to the equipment manufactured by Cummins.

Subsidiaries

Cummins Sales and Service Private Limited (CSSPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary, focuses on sales of Cummins engines, parts, and accessories. It also provides service support to engines and generators, focusing on the region close to Delhi NCR.

Ashwath Ram, Managing Director

Mr. Ram has been the managing director of Cummins India since August 2019. Earlier, he held the same post for Tata Cummins as well as the VP of the engine business in India. He had worked as a senior manager in both marketing and operations during his initial days at Cummins India. Before that, he was the managing director of Affinity Express and Ashra Consultants.
