About Berger Paints India

History of Berger Paints India Limited

Incorporated in 1923 as Hadfield’s (India) Limited, Berger Paints is one of India’s leading paint manufacturing companies. Hadfield’s (India) Limited started its operations in India with just one factory in West Bengal. In 1947, it was acquired by British Paints (Holdings) Limited, UK and changed its name to British Paints (India) Limited. In 1983, the company was renamed as Berger Paints India Limited. Presently, the Delhi-based Dhingra brothers hold a majority stake in the company. 

In 1996, the company released its IPO and is currently listed on the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE), BSE Limited and the Calcutta Stock Exchange Limited. Berger Paints India Limited is a part of several benchmark indices like Nifty 100, Nifty 500, etc. 

In 2000, the company entered the Nepal market by acquiring Jenson & Nicholson, Nepal and renamed it Berger Jenson & Nicholson, Nepal. The company entered a partnership in 2007, signing a Joint Venture with Nippon Bee Chemical Co Ltd of Japan to manufacture and sell coatings for plastic substrates utilised in automobiles and related parts. In 2012, they entered the new chemical business. The company expanded its product base year by year. 

As of March 2023, Berger Paints India Limited is the 2nd largest paint company in India, the 4th largest paint company in Asia and the 7th largest paint company in the world. The company has a consented manufacturing capacity of 12,72,705 Kiloliters per Metric Ton (KL-MT) with 184 warehouses. They have 29 paint manufacturing facilities, of which 25 are in India, 2 in Nepal, 1 in Poland and 1 in Russia. They have a strong distribution network of more than 60,000 dealers and retailers.

  • Decorative Products: Under this segment, the company offers various paint products for interior walls, exterior walls, waterproofing solutions, wood finishers, metal finishers, and much more. The products include Silk Glamor High Sheen, Easy Clean, Luxol 7 in 1, Luxol High Gloss Enamel, WeatherCoat Long Life 10, Bison Wall Putty, and more. 
  • Industrial Products: Under this, the company offers products for industrial uses like general industry, which includes exterior building materials, electric home appliances, etc. They also offer powder coatings and protective coatings. 

As of March 31, 2023, there are 5 wholly-owned subsidiary companies under Berger Paints India Limited. A few of them are as follows:

  • Beepee Coatings Private Limited: This company manufactures and supplies paints, resins, varnishes, etc. 
  • Berger Jenson & Nicholson (Nepal) Private Limited: This company manufactures and sells construction chemicals and decorative and industrial coatings in Nepal.
  • SBL Specialty Coatings Private Limited: This company is in technical collaboration with a Korean company and manufactures Neostone, which is NonPTFE based Non-Stick Ceramic coatings.
