About Balrampur Chini Mills

History

Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) was incorporated on July 14, 1975. In that year, its Balrampur plant commenced its operations in cane crushing with a capacity of 800 tonnes per day. The company acquired controlling stakes in Babhnan Sugar Mill Limited in 1990 and Tulsipur Sugar Company Limited in 1998. Their present crushing capacities in 2023 are 10,000 tonnes and 7,000 tonnes per day, respectively. The company was listed on October 12, 1994.

In March 2003, BCML commissioned a bagasse-based co-generation power plant at Balrampur. In the same year, the company established a new Greenfield sugar complex in Haidergarh, Uttar Pradesh. This complex has a sugarcane crushing capacity of 4,000 tonnes per day and a co-generation capacity of 20.25 MW. Additionally, in 2004, the company set up distillery operations at its Babhnan unit, with a capacity of 60 kilolitres per day (KLPD).

In 2005, a Greenfield sugar project with a crushing capacity of 7,500 TCD was set up at Akbarpur along with a bagasse-based 18 megawatts co-generation power plant. In 2007, its new greenfield integrated sugar complex launched operations at Kumbhi, UP, with an 8,000 TCD sugar plant and 20 MW co-generation power plant.

In January 2020, the company’s Gularia distillery commenced operations with a production capacity of 160 KLPD ethanol through the B-Heavy and C-Heavy molasses routes. In 2022-23, the Balrampur distillery’s capacity was further expanded from 160 KLPD to 330 KLPD with a state-of-the-art condensate polishing unit. The Maizapur Distillery Plant of 320 KLPD was commissioned effective November 6, 2022.

Business Segments

Balrampur Chini Mills produces the following products:

  1. Sugar – BCML is among the top sugar manufacturers in India, with an overall crushing capacity of 77,500 tonnes of cane per day across 10 plants as of May 2023.
  2. Ethanol & Alcohol – The distillery segment of the company generates revenue largely from selling industrial alcohol such as ethanol. The alcohol is sold under contracts with public and private oil marketing companies and other institutional buyers.
  3. Bagasse -The fibrous matter that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract the juice is called bagasse, which is used as biofuel. It is also supplied to paper industries for the manufacture of eco-friendly paper. It is also used in making sustainable disposable food ware.
  4. Power – Bagasse is often used as the primary fuel source in sugar mills for the production of heat, energy and electricity. This includes combusting bagasse in furnaces to produce steam for renewable power generation.
  5. DDGS – Distiller’s Dried Grain Solubles (DDGS) refers to the by-product extracted during ethanol production. DDGS is rich in protein, fibre, fat, and minerals and thus highly suitable as a livestock feed ingredient.
  6. Agri-Inputs – The company converts leftover ash waste from incineration boilers into bio-potash granules, an essential fertiliser. The company also churns out pressmud, a rich source of organic manure. The use of such agri inputs promotes chemical-free farming.
